While many pastors and churches are willing to pay to publicize church events, many times they overlook a powerful, and free, advertising tool -- old-fashioned newspapers and radio stations.
You can reach both of these with a press release, usually emailed to them. In many cases, a newspaper will print the content of the press release with little or no editing, especially if it's well-written and contains all the relevant information.
Here are some basic tips to using local media outlets to advertise your church events:
- Maintain a list of email addresses and phone numbers for your local media outlets.
- Write it like a newspaper article. The first paragraph should contain all relevant information, and the paragraphs below should add flavor through quotations and additional information.
- Edit thoroughly to avoid grammatical, spelling, or factual errors. Many media outlets will use press releases verbatim without serious editing.
- Include contact information; it is possible that a local radio station or newspaper will want an interview.
